From this Monday (26) Brazil faces a wave of intense cold with negative temperatures. The polar air mass should hit the southern region of the country with greater force. Temperatures can be below -8ºC in the highest areas of Rio Grande do Sul.

As of Tuesday (27), this cold front begins to move more quickly across the national territory. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), this is the third polar mass that Brazil faces in 2021.
Cold should go until early August
According to Inmet, the expectation is that the cold will last until, at least, August 1st. After advancing through the South, Southeast and Midwest, the southwest of the Amazon must be reached. In this region, however, the mass loses strength and should cause an episode of chilling.
Inmet informs that, still on the 27th, the South Region should present “a sharp decline in maximum temperatures”
. In the following days (28th and 29th), the cold air should advance through western Brazil and over São Paulo. On the 29th and 30th, the rest of the Southeast and other areas of the Midwest will be affected.“Most likely, we will have another episode of intense cold (similar or stronger than the event at the end of June)”, informs Inmet. The information is from the Brazil News Agency.
South should have the lowest temperatures
According to Agência Brasil, this cold front should be more rigorous than the last one. The predicted minimums are – 6°C and – 8°C in a wide area of the South Region on the morning of the 30th.
There are also indications of temperatures lower than – 8°C in the higher altitude areas of the South. Inmet does not rule out a new occurrence of snow in the Catarinense and Gaúcha mountains, between the 29th and 30th.
“If these predictions persist, very possibly, there will be the formation of broad frost (of strong intensity) in practically the entire region. South region, south of Mato Grosso do Sul and southeast of São Paulo. However, for other areas of the Midwest and Southeast (mainly Serra da Mantiqueira, on the border between São Paulo and Minas Gerais), there will still be conditions of persistent cloudiness and/or light rain that would inhibit the formation of frost”, he adds, in Note, the Inmet.
In addition to actual temperatures, the wind chill may reach – 25ºC in the most affected regions. Events like this one are rare in Brazil, but they were registered in 2000 and 2007.
It is worth mentioning that, even in São Paulo, the cold can reach temperatures below 0°C. Therefore, prepare the cold coat.
