To preserve its own language, Italy wants to ban the use of English

The political party Brothers of Italy, according to the proposal of deputy Fabio Rampelli, has the objective of restricting the use of the foreign language on Italian soil. According to information, the project allows a fine of up to €100.00 (R$550,000, converted) for Italians who use English or other languages in official communications.

The proposal arrives as an incentive to preserve the local language, as presented, stating that the act of speaking English becomes worse because the UK not be part of the European Union.

English restriction in Italy

The deputy's project has the support of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni so far. The use would be restricted to any and all foreign languages, but especially to English, justified by the deputy as an “Anglomania” whose focus is to “debase and mortify” the Italian language.

The restriction of words in English, subject to a fine, will be aimed at people in public office who prefer to speak other languages instead of pronouncing their own Italian. It will therefore be required that all these people have the proper knowledge of writing and speaking the Italian language.

As with pronouncements, acronyms or names in English, even if they are in official documents, will also be prohibited. The proposal was presented, but has not yet been discussed with other parliamentarians.

bill

CNN Brasil investigated the bill presented by the deputy and reported on the requirements for applicability. In the first article, as discussed, offices in general will be required to have the Italian language as their main source of communication, even when dealing with foreign clients.

The proposal also makes it possible, in agreement with the Ministry of Culture, to establish a committee to reinforce the full use of Italian in schools, in commerce and in any communication. The fine, in case of non-compliance, will be €5,000 (R$27,500) to €100,000 (R$550,000).
