What is it?
Hyperthymesia, also known as Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) or Supermemory syndrome, is a condition that causes people to remember accurately and in great detail about events in their lives. The details to remember are very personal, such as specific dates, information, weather of the day, etc.
However, there is a limitation in this type of memory, which is just remembering information about oneself and one's own experiences. For impersonal events, HSAM holders tend to have an average memory or even less than when it comes to personal information.
Short and long term memory
According to a 2016 study, people with HSAM tend to have better long-term memory than average people, but their short-term memory is equivalent to that of a normal person, being processed in the same way, according to Medical News Today.
The burden of never forgetting
One of the great characteristics of people who have HSAM is that they are unable to forget their life experiences. According to a report by the Wisconsin Medical Society, these memories are involuntarily encoded and retrieved automatically.
Thus, it can be quite boring to live with some memory that you want to forget and can't. Because of this, a person with this condition has more difficulty overcoming the pain of loss and regret.
Nicole Donohue, one of the 62 carriers of HSAM in the world, participated in a study and reported: “You feel the same emotions... You can't turn off this flow of memories, no matter how much you try”.
