A schoolDiscovery Academy in Stoke-on-Trent, in the West Midlands region of England, decided to install metal bars on the bathroom doors to prevent students from going to them at unauthorized times.

This attitude revolted the parents, especially when they found out that the places would only be open during breaks and at lunchtime. One of the mothers of a student said that her son has a medical certificate claiming that he needs to go to the bathroom constantly.

The hope of the parents with the protest is that the school will rethink this initiative and step back with this attitude.

But why did the school install these railings?

For some parents, this measure was taken after acts of vandalism and also to prevent students from using cell phones during classes. However, parents are still very angry because, for them, this situation is humiliating for their children.

One of the mothers pointed out that girls of a certain age need to go to the bathroom at inconsistent times and, sometimes, at the last minute. For her, being a girl is hard enough, now imagine having to go through a situation where there is bleeding in front of the whole class.

Alpha Academies Trust (AAT), which runs Discovery Academy, did not comment on when, exactly, the barriers are opened and locked. She only said that this measure was to encourage students to go to the restrooms at regular times and that, for those who need to use the restrooms on a regular basis, access is unlimited.
