Common sweetener may be considered a risk for cancer, warns WHO agency

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (Iarc), linked to the World Health Organization (WHO), is ready to announce that aspartame, one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in the world, could potentially be carcinogenic.

The WHO recently sparked controversy by publishing guidance discouraging the use of sugar-free sweeteners as a weight management strategy. Despite the indications of the two organizations, Brazil is still far from this perspective.

WHO warns about carcinogenic sweetener, but Anvisa does not point out problems

In Brazil, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) released a technical report in 2020, with an update in 2021, which makes no mention of any association between aspartame and cancer.

The sweetener aspartame has been the subject of extensive scientific investigation, including post-marketing monitoring, epidemiological studies, clinical research and experimental studies.

An observational study carried out in France last year, with a sample of 100,000 adults, revealed a association between high consumption of artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, and a slight increase in the risk of cancer.

Following this reasoning, the Ramazzini Institute conducted research in Italy in the early 2000s that identified a possible link between aspartame and certain types of cancer in mice.

Two sources with knowledge on the subject revealed to the Reuters Agency that the WHO is about to classify aspartame as potentially carcinogenic.

So far, after disclosure of confidential information, the use of the sweetener continues to be permitted by the WHO and other organizations.
