And of course, to make good impressions it is necessary to avoid some habits. Check out four of these habits below that should be avoided at all costs!

1 – Lack of eye contact

Eye contact is essential to convey confidence, sincerity and interest. Therefore, when we avoid looking someone in the eye, we send a clear message of disinterest and withdrawal.

Whether because of low self-esteem, previous negative information or shyness, looking away is even “common”. However, doing so creates a tremendously bad impression on the interlocutor!

Doing this can make you appear embarrassed, unsure, anxious, judgmental, distant, or uninterested. These are appearances to avoid when making a positive first impression.

2 – Apathetic body language

Posture is key when forming first impressions. Our body language speaks louder than words, and first impressions are formed before we even exchange a word. These impressions are difficult to change and profoundly affect how we regard someone.

A bad posture conveys low self-esteem, exhaustion, depression, self-indulgence, apathy and laziness. On the other hand, standing with an upright and correct posture creates a positive impression right from the start.

3 – Demonstrate nervousness

Nervous movements reveal anxiety and low self-esteem, creating a negative and weak first impression. Sometimes we don't even realize we're acting restlessly, as it becomes a habit.

Fidgeting nervously may include actions such as frequent scratching of the arms, head, neck, nose, or hands, clearing the throat, or repeatedly blowing your nose, constantly adjusting jewelry or clothing, obsessively checking your phone, or repeatedly looking at your clock. The solution to this problem is to practice deep breathing and being still, avoiding fidgeting behaviors.

4 – Murmur

Eye contact and posture are the first aspects noticed when we enter someone's field of vision. If you maintain eye contact, confident posture, and avoid nervous movements, you've already passed the first three steps to making a great impression.

However, when speaking, it is important to avoid mumbling. Speaking unclearly or mumbling conveys low self-esteem, lack of confidence, disorganization, confusion and low intelligence. Improving your diction and speaking clearly and audibly will help create a better first auditory impression.

How do first impressions impact business and love?

First impressions are extremely important in many areas of our lives. in the world of business, they can open doors, build trust and establish partnerships.

In love, first impressions play a significant role in attraction and the potential for commitment. While not everything is in our control, eliminating these unhealthy habits will help create positive first impressions.

Changing First Impressions: The Challenge and the Possibility

Changing a negative first impression can be difficult, but not impossible. The best approach is not to take it personally and demonstrate through your behavior and actions that you are not the person someone may have initially thought you to be.

Remember, the impression you have of yourself matters most at the end of the day!

So, avoid the four habits mentioned above when meeting someone for the first time. Instead, make eye contact, maintain a confident posture, avoid nervous movements, and speak clearly. That way, you'll be well on your way to making good first impressions in many areas of your life.
