Why is a weighted blanket more beneficial to sleep?

The claim that there is a relationship between blankets and melatonin production came through an article published in the Journal of Sleep Research. To reach this conclusion, the researchers invited 26 volunteers to sleep for a few nights in a laboratory so that their behavior could be observed.

In the proposal in question, it was established that the participants should go to bed at 10 pm, but the lights would turn off only at 11 pm. Participants would receive either a lighter blanket or a heavier one, so the scientists would analyze melatonin production on both occasions.

Throughout the night, the scientists collected saliva every 20 minutes to map melatonin levels. From this, it was possible to see that, on average, volunteers wrapped in heavy blankets had about 32% more melatonin than participants who used lighter blankets.

Why does it happen?

Although it has been possible to prove the relationship between the heaviest blankets and the production of melatonin, scientists still don't know for sure what's behind it. of this phenomenon, however, it is believed that this is due to the fact that heavy blankets bring a greater sense of comfort and security, but it is only one hypothesis.

Certainly, the study was important to be able to detect yet another way to encourage the natural production of melatonin. The dissemination of data was also essential, since the search for medicines that induce sleep, as a way to overcome the lack of melatonin, has increased in recent times.
