Professor creates controversy when he says that young people 'should never stay at home'

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Professor Scott Galloway, who teaches marketing at the Stern School of Business in University of New York and is host of the ‘The Prof G Pod’ podcast got into a controversy with Millennials and “Gen Zrs” on the TikTok.

The whole controversy started when Galloway said, during an interview for the WST itself, that young people 'should never stay at home' if they want to succeed in life.

“You should never be home. That's what I tell young people. The house is for seven hours of sleep and that's it”, said the professor.

“The amount of time you spend at home is inversely correlated with your success – professionally and romantically. You need to be out and about,” he went on.

“If you're not working, you should be with friends, trying to find a mate or working out,” said Scott Galloway, NYU marketing professor and host of The Prof G Pod podcast, at the

The speech sparked debate

In the comments section of the video, which already has more than 4 million views on TikTok, thousands of users began to oppose Scott Galloway.

“This man is disconnected from reality,” said one user. “He has a privileged economic perspective,” said another.

Several other users cited that inflation is making the cost of living higher, pointing out that with the high rent as it is, it doesn't make sense to stay away from home for long.

“I'm paying $1900 a month for this house, I'm spending every minute I can here!” exclaimed one user. "I don't pay that rent to never be home" said another.

However, another group of commentators defended Scott Galloway, saying they understood his point of view.

"Y'all talking like weirdos as nothing he's saying is a crazy person wrote it," one person said.

“Just go to the park, library, square, walk down a street, mall or any large space, and you'll be leaving home. It's a health issue too."

In this regard, another user even gave advice to his peers. “Go outside, go for a run, have a picnic, play football, walk. It doesn't have to cost money to leave, folks. Make memories,” he advised.

Scott Galloway defends himself

After having his lines partially negatively echoed, Professor Scott Galloway came forward to explain his lines.

To this end, the scholar shared the video of the interview on his Instagram profile and reaffirmed many of his words.

“Yes, I did. If you're young, get out. Talk to people. Run the risk of displeasing, of embarrassment and rejection. Mingle with people your own age, seniors, younger people,” he wrote.

Still according to Galloway, hanging out with other people is a great way to stop being an introvert and achieve career success.

The debates generated by the professor's speeches are related to the condition: home office work versus an increase in the cost of living.

This is because, while more and more professionals work from home, inflation has increased prices in most of countries, which “settles” people even more in their homes, sometimes because of work, sometimes to save money.

On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that doing outdoor activities, interacting with people and being in contact with nature are essential activities that cannot be done within four walls.
