The main proposal should be discussed by the Portuguese parliament in the coming days and provides for an increase in the internship grant to 950 euros (which is equivalent to the R$ 5,000 mentioned). This readjustment has already been approved by the Council of Ministers.

Internship without pay was common

According to information contained in the project, until then, Portuguese companies could offer internships without remuneration, just for professional experience.

Thus, students worked “for free” and in exchange for knowledge for their still developing careers. With the approval of the new law, at least 12 professional associations must have a basic value for the remuneration of interns established by law.

Among the areas that will have the readjustment are dentistry, medicine, engineering, notary office (notary service – notary), nursing, economics, architecture, pharmacy and law.

The minimum wage will increase

In addition to the new minimum wage for internships in Portugal, the minimum wage should also increase by around 25% there. With this readjustment, the minimum will reach €760, equivalent to R$4,000 per month.

Still on internship remuneration, the new law also provides for the elimination of registration fees for vacancies for some people. In this case, this will only apply to the citizens who prove the inability to pay for the amount.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, informed in a statement that no one can be prevented from exercising the profession. In this case, she says that the impediment should not be generated because of the financial condition, whatever it may be.
