The box office success of No Return Home surpassed even the most optimistic predictions and gave the movie industry a much-needed boost.
The film grossed US$253 million in the United States and Canada and US$334.2 million in more than 60 international markets.
007: No Time To Die remains the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2021, followed by Fast & Furious 9, but Spider-Man should pass both given its successful start.
Commenting on the results, Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman said: "The historic results of Spider-Man: No Going Home this weekend around the world, even in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unparalleled cultural impact that cinemas can to have."
Sony shares the rights to Spider-Man with Marvel Studios (which is owned by Disney), and while Holland appears in Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sony produces the films independent.
