Japan plans a floating city that will accommodate 40,000 residents

An innovative city proposal is emerging in the Japanese real estate market, integrating food production, architecture, data, energy and water in a symbiotic system. This initiative arises in response to the possibility of an eventual extinction of humanity.

A Japanese startup has been preparing for this post-apocalyptic scenario and has developed a project for a city that resembles a “Ark of Noah” futuristic, able to house about 40 thousand people.

Called “Dogen City,” this complete city will be built to float on the sea and will offer tourist options, even including the ability to launch rockets.

Although it may seem like an apocalyptic project at first sight, based on the science fiction film by Roland Emmerich, “2012”, the proposal of the startup N-Ark has a more tourism-oriented character. When completed, Dogen City will resemble a luxury resort more than a contingency shelter.

Although it seems a bit fanciful, this innovative approach aims to integrate several elements, such as food production, architecture, data, energy and water, in a symbiotic system.

The city will use the deep blue ocean as a new and resilient economic zone, called “NEW OCEAN”. Through it, a collaboration between industry, academia and government, through private ocean business innovation, different forms of technologies, laws and regulations will be integrated to make this economic space a reality.

The term “NEW OCEAN” is inspired by the oceanic version of the private space innovation called “New Space”, initiated by SpaceX.

the city details

The city of the future is becoming a reality through Dogen City's innovative design, which aims to ensure sustainability in three different layers.

The first layer consists of creating an independent, decentralized maritime city designed to adapt to climate change. This city will focus on residents' daily physical and mental self-care, offering a wide variety of programs and activities.

The second layer involves building an underwater data infrastructure, which will contribute to the development of business models related to the maritime environment.

Ultimately, N-ARK has ambitious plans to harness open water to establish a new space-connected tourism industry. The city's soil will be used as a launch and landing site for rocket transport services.

Dogen City is expected to be completed by 2050, providing an exciting glimpse into the future.
