Compared to the year 2021, the record made by the Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO) showed an increase of 14.3% in market values, totaling an average of 143.7 points in total. Since 1990, as guided by the institution itself, this is the largest record ever made.
The high prices are due to the absence of food commodities, a major disruption caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine. Shortages have been identified in various parts of the world. In 2021, due to the pandemic consequences, the index had already reached 28% compared to the year 2020.
With the invasion in Ukraine, prices increased considerably from February 2022, even more so with the possibility of disruption to Black Sea trade that could be influenced by war.
In the last month of the year, the index was down through the ninth month, reaching 132.4 points. Still in November 2022, the index represented 135 points.
The fall in December was made possible by the international decrease in vegetable oils, declines in meat and cereals. The increases were for dairy products and sugar.
FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero commented on the change:

In 2022, the foods that showed the most increase were meat, cereals, vegetable oils and dairy products. Sugar had the highest index recorded in the last 10 years.
