According to data collected in a study carried out by the consultancy Home Security Heroes on the PassGAN Artificial Intelligence, specialized in cracking passwords, many passwords can be cracked in up to one minute.
The sampling shows that 51% of the passwords tested were discovered by the platform within just 24 hours. Meanwhile, 65% of other passwords were cracked in 1 hour, 71% in less than a day and 81% in less than a month.

Home Security Heroes investigators used, together with the PassGAN system, a database containing more than 15 million credentials belonging to the company Rockyou, which tracks and stores passwords considered easy, precisely with the aim of seeking solutions to increase security of data.
As you can see, the results obtained by the survey are alarming. After all, malicious people who have access to PassGAN can easily obtain confidential information from individuals who have traceable passwords.
But, how to protect passwords against attacks?
According to researchers at Home Security Heroes, the best way to prevent passwords from being discovered by AIs is to create longer and more diverse passwords.
Passwords must contain at least 12 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. This tip is based on the fact that PassGAN's AI has not discovered any password with these characteristics.
Other tips for increasing password security are:
- Activate the two-factor authentication system, when available;
- Do not use the same password in different places;
- Do not connect to public Wi-Fi networks.
