MEC focuses its efforts on literacy and full-time teaching

During a meeting of the National Front of Mayors (FNP) in Brasilia, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, emphasized the importance of creation of programs aimed at making children literate at the right age, expanding full-time teaching and connectivity in schools. The event also addressed topics such as readjusting the salary floor for teachers and alternatives to face the educational deficit caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The minister began the debate by reinforcing the role of mayors in implementing public education policies so that they can effectively reach the population. According to Santana, it is necessary to create result indicators to evaluate actions and, for this, dialogue with public managers is essential.

He pointed out that the first action taken by the Ministry of Education, as determined by President Lula, was to open the doors to listen all those involved in the country's education policies, including mayors, governors, class entities, teachers and students.

In addition, Santana announced a new round of payments from the National Education Development Fund (FNDE) for the continuity of school works in states and municipalities. The aim is to ensure that ongoing educational projects can be completed.

The minister highlighted the creation of central programs for the recovery of children's learning, affected by the pandemic. One of the plans will focus on children's literacy, as only 4 out of 10 Brazilian children are learning to read and write at the right age.

Santana stated that this program for literacy at the right age will extend to the 5th year of elementary school, with the aim of recomposing the education lost during the Covid-19 crisis.

Another proposal presented by the Ministry of Education is the expansion of full-time teaching in all grades of the country's public school system. The goal of the National Education Plan (PNE) is to reach, over the next four years, the mark of 25% of full-time enrollments in fundamental education.

The minister also pledged to create a program focused on connectivity in schools, installing internet broadband and high speed and offering technological equipment to improve community access school.
