Limits and implications of rectification

The first point to consider when deciding to amend your income tax return is that if the amount of the tax payable increase after the correction, there will be a need to pay the difference, together with one traffic ticket and interest based on the Selic rate.

Also, there is a limit to the amount of corrections you can make: they are allowed up to five rectifications over a five-year period, as long as the declaration is not under inspection procedure.

Finally, in cases where the taxpayer is summoned by the Federal Revenue Service to render accounts, rectification is not possible.

How to rectify the declaration through the My Tax Income platform

If you sent your tax return through the My Income Tax program, the rectification process is as follows:

  1. Open the program, log in with your information and select the “Transmitted” option;
  2. Then, locate the declaration you want to rectify and click on “Rectify Declaration”;
  3. Afterwards, you must fill in the delivery receipt number of the original declaration in the field “Rectification declaration”;
  4. Finally, make the necessary changes and resubmit the statement.

Rectification through the IRS website

If you prefer to make the rectification online, through the IRS, you'll need:

  1. Access the e-CAC (Virtual Service Center) and enter your login details;
  2. Right after, select the option “My Income Tax (DIRPF Extract)”;
  3. Then choose the year you want to rectify and click on “Fill out Online Declaration”;
  4. Finally, select the “Rectify Declaration” option, make the necessary changes and resubmit the declaration.
