How to plant black pepper?
- Ground
One of the advantages of planting black pepper is that it adapts to any type of soil. However, choose one that is well drained, fertile and rich in organic matter. Furthermore, it is a plant that does not like a lot of humidity, since excess water can cause fungus and even the death of the pepper tree.
- climate and luminosity
As a tropical plant, its ideal climate is hot and humid. Therefore, the best regions to cultivate the pepper tree are those with more than 23°C throughout the year, with some rainfall and high humidity in the air. In addition, it is best that it be exposed to direct light or partial shade.
- Planting
The ideal period for planting black pepper is in the rainy season in that region. In general, its cultivation is done from cuttings, since when planted through seeds, its development can take a while.
In addition, it is a plant that can be grown in pots or directly in the soil, just make sure that the soil remains moist, but never soaked. Also, seedlings can take three to four months to grow.
- Harvest
Black pepper can be consumed at different stages. With this, you can choose which type of pepper you want to harvest:
- To have black type peppers, you must harvest them when they are still green and then leave them exposed to the sun until they become wrinkled and dark.
- For the green type, they must also be green, however they must be used when they are still fresh.
- To have white peppers, you must harvest them when they are almost ripe and then place them in cotton bags and leave them under running water. After that, put them exposed to the sun to dry.
- Finally, to obtain the red type, the fruits should only be harvested when they are fully ripe. Also, they need to be used fresh or kept in preserves.
