Change in sight: Google announced a new update in its policies for the so-called “fan channels” on YouTube, with the aim of combating the improper reproduction of content by profiles posing as famous accounts.
This practice is common on social networks, especially on YouTube and TikTok, as the platforms allow profiles to accumulate views and followers using content produced by others profiles.

With these new rules, fan channel administrators will have to make it clear that the account is not the original profile, either from a creator, artist or other entity, making it clear in the profile name or channel identifier that it is a tribute or reference.

The platform also informed that it will punish more severely accounts that try to impersonate other channels (such as channels that use the same profile picture or background image as the original, or make use of techniques such as inserting numbers in place of letters). In these cases, the profiles will be subject to the harsh sanctions of the platform.
In addition to all these new rules, Google has imposed restrictions on the technical resources of the platform to prevent channels from being created with the same characteristics as the original and later used to interact or comment on other accounts, pretending to be the authentic profile.
These measures are intended to protect the community from YouTube against impersonation and fraud, helping genuine fan channels celebrate their favorite creators while protecting original creators from malicious practices.
The new policies will be put into practice from August 21st and channels that do not meet the requirements established by the platform may be suspended or terminated.
This update builds on other measures taken by YouTube in 2023, such as banning ad blockers and demonetizing game channels with inappropriate content.
