Step by step to plant kiwi at home

There are several types of kiwi, divided into two groups: male and female. Males are bulkier than females, with larger, pointed leaves.

As a first step you need to decide the type of kiwi you want to plant, as you need a male and a female for it to bear fruit. The females can be: Bruno, Monty, Abbott and Hayward, and the males: Matua, Tomuri and MPV.

Thus, growing them at home is not a difficult activity, but requires attention to many details, such as space, temperature, soil, support and watering. See below!

  • Area

The area reserved for kiwi planting needs to be spacious, as the plant needs to grow and fully develop in order to bear fruit. However, for the tree to start giving kiwi fruit, it is necessary plant a female species and a male species together.

  • Temperature

The kiwi tree supports up to minus 15ºC and has a preference for milder climates. Therefore, the ideal temperature to plant it is during the winter, between the months of July and August, but if you plant with already formed seedlings, the best time is between September and October.

Look for a place with a lot of shade to plant this fruit, where the sun doesn't hit directly and the wind doesn't blow too hard, so that the trees don't fall.

  • soil and planting

The land to plant kiwi needs to provide nutrients for the development of the tree, so bet on industrialized or even homemade fertilizers. Planting, on the other hand, needs to be done in a hole 10 centimeters deep, placing male and female kiwi seeds together.

  • Support

The kiwi tree can reach a height of up to 10 meters, but it needs support to develop correctly. Thus, invest in pipes, broom handles and wooden stakes as a support for the plant.

  • Irrigation

Ideally, you should water the kiwi plant on average once a week. However, this measure can vary, since in hot and dry seasons, the tree will need more water.
