msn messenger
MSN Messenger, created by Microsoft in 1999, was one of the most popular instant messaging programs at the time. The software soon overtook its competitor, ICQ, and became the leader in Brazil.
However, in 2012 it was announced that MSN would be replaced by Skype and in 2013 the program was discontinued. User accounts have been migrated to Skype.
ICQ
ICQ was one of the first instant messaging programs and revolutionized fast communication between people online. The service, created in 1996, reached the mark of 1 million users in two years.
To use ICQ, Internet users were given an identification number, the UIN. Although it was a great success, ICQ did not stand up to the competition of MSN Messenger.
miRC
Before messaging apps, miRC was one of the main means of communication between people on the internet. Created in 1995, it used the IRC protocol and promoted conversations between millions of people around the world.
However, miRC did not support photos and users identified themselves through a nickname. Despite being revolutionary for the time, it lost space for other messaging services.
eMule
eMule was one of the most popular file sharers on the internet and appeared in mid-2002. The tool was a great option for anyone who liked to download files on P2P networks. Although it still exists today, the program is no longer as successful as before.
These programs marked a generation and today, many people miss the time when they were the main means of communication and file sharing.
With the emergence of new technologies and applications, they became obsolete and were replaced by other more modern and updated services. Even so, these programs will never be forgotten and will always be remembered as an important part of internet history.
