The Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) held a public hearing to discuss violence in public schools and announced a series of measures to combat the problem. The bill for the creation of the State Council for School Safety, proposed by congresswoman Carla Machado (PT), aims to objective to solicit more investment from the state to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty and employees.

Among the proposed measures is the installation of security cameras in all schools, the hiring of more security professionals to work in school units and the creation of a program to prevent and combat bullying and cyberbullying. In addition to actions to mediate conflicts, ongoing activities in culture, leisure and appreciation of young people and an educational policy based on respect for diversity.
The bill proposes the control of possession and circulation of weapons and the implementation of an anonymous reporting channel to report cases of violence and harassment in schools. Students and staff will be able to report cases of violence, whether physical, psychological or sexual, without exposing themselves to possible retaliation.

Deputy Munir Neto (PSD), president of the Committee on Children, Adolescents and Elderly Affairs of the Alerj, said he will forward the document to Governor Cláudio Castro and Secretary of Education, Roberta Barrett.
The deputy highlighted that violence in schools is a serious problem that needs to be fought. “An attack on a school is not an isolated incident. It's part of a clearly flawed ecosystem. And taking care of children and adolescents is a duty of society as a whole,” he says. Alerj hopes that the bill will be approved soon and that the proposed measures can be put into practice as soon as possible.
