Scientists from the Technical University of Denmark and Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden) managed to reestablish the world record for internet speed. Using a photonic chip, the researchers achieved data transmission at a speed of 1.84 petabits per second, over a distance of approximately 8 km.
The optical chip converts an infrared laser into a rainbow spectrum, this conversion takes place by a "frequency comb" which is considered a technique to accurately measure frequencies of magnetic radiation (eg light).
What does that mean? What is the capacity of the chip?
In other words, a single laser color can be multiplied into hundreds of frequencies by the same chip. All colors have a specific frequency, so the “frequency comb” is used as a reference.
Due to the great wavelength of electromagnetic waves, a significant number of waves with different frequencies are generated, which are fully suited to optical fiber transmission, which, when used for internet browsing, brings high quality speed.
After this test stream, the scientists claim that 1.84 petabit is not the limit. The possibilities of simulations are being studied so that the optical chips reach a mark of 100 petabits per second.
