A Japanese study links sexual interest with risk of death!

A study published on December 14 last year in PLOS One revealed that there is a relationship between the risk of early death and sexual interest of men living in Japan. According to research, when this interest is lower, it can be a risk alert.

However, the exact relationship between libido and mortality should be studied further on an individual basis. However, researchers speculate that lowered sexual interest may be a more noticeable sign of other health problems still going unnoticed.

The study used data from 20,969 volunteers, 12,411 women and 8,558 men, ages 40 and older. These people held annual exams in Yamagata, a mountainous region in Japan popular for its warm waters, temples, and natural beauty.

For this, these volunteers were analyzed for six years by the research team at the University of Yamagata. They used the levels of sexual interest of the participants, who answered an initial questionnaire. From the first questionnaire to the end of the study, of all 20,969 participants, 503 had died.

This allowed researchers to realize that the mortality by cancer or other factors was significantly higher for men who responded that they had no sexual interest in the first questionnaire. The calculation was maintained even when related to other factors, such as age, hypertension, smokers, alcohol consumers, body fat, marital status, diabetes, education, frequency of laughter and psychological illnesses.

The study also noted that women were more likely to be less sexually interested, with 16% of participants reporting no desire, compared to 8% of men. However, regarding women, there was no significant relationship between mortality and lack of libido, as could be seen among men.

Finally, it should be noted that, as this is a purely observational study, it is not possible to define a deeper relationship between the factors, such as what is the cause and what is the result, for example.
