The process of urbanization and settlement carried out in the Southern Region, unlike most other regions, resulted in a fairly regular distribution of its population throughout the southern territory.
Despite the homogeneity in relation to the distribution of the population in the region, there are areas that concentrate the majority of inhabitants, thus, the The main ones are the metropolitan regions of Curitiba and Porto Alegre, in addition to other medium-sized cities with populations of up to 100,000 population.
These metropolitan regions, in the last thirty years, have significantly increased their population contingent, among the various reasons that caused this process highlights the rural exodus, caused by the development of agricultural production linked to the mechanization and modernization of the countryside, which caused the loss of thousands of jobs in rural areas, in addition, there was a growing concentration of land ownership, when part of the small rural producers migrated to cities. This social segment was not only directed to the large urban centers of the Southern Region, the people who lived in small towns, due to the lack of employment, they were forced to leave in search of better conditions. of life.
However, the generation of employment did not reach levels that matched the number of workers, the lack of jobs led many people to enter the informal market and to occupy residential areas that are often clandestine and lack the basic services provided by the government (sanitation, treated water, policing, paving, lighting, etc. others).
