The competition, which has not awarded its winners since 2021, reached its 18th edition this Tuesday (30), accumulating more than a thousand medalists throughout its history.
One of these winners is Isabela Besen, who won the gold medal at the 16th edition of the Brazilian Mathematics of Public Schools (Obmep) – which took place 2 years ago – and won the bronze medal at the 17th edition. Now, she got ready to take the test of the first phase of the 18th competition.
Isabela expressed her anxiety and shared that she was the first Obmep gold medalist in Campos Novos, a city located in the mountain mesoregion of Santa Catarina. She has been encouraging other young women to participate in the competition, as several colleagues have sought her advice on how to succeed in the competition.
The deputy director of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) and general coordinator of Obmep, Claudio Landim, reported that, due to the pandemic, it was not possible to hold the award ceremony.
Next Sunday, the 4th, students will be received in Florianópolis and, throughout the three days of the event, they will participate in academic activities, will share experiences and have the opportunity to attend a lecture by researcher Paulo Orenstein, from Impa.
Paulo Orenstein is a member of the Impa Project and Innovation Center (Centro Pi) and will address topics related to data science and artificial intelligence (AI).
This year's award will go to students who won a gold medal in the 2021 and 2022 editions. The ceremony will bring together over a thousand students from various parts of Brazil, many of whom will have their first experience traveling by plane.
It is important to emphasize that, under normal conditions, the national competition has 575 gold medalists.
18th edition of Obmep
This Tuesday, the first phase of the 18th edition of Obmep took place, bringing with it two notable records. The number of registered schools reached a total of 55.3 thousand institutions, while the number of participating cities reached 5,563, covering an impressive 99.87% of Brazilian municipalities.
These numbers reflect the participation of a total of 18.3 million students, who will face a multiple-choice test with 20 questions.
The test carried out at this stage will serve as a classification criterion in which the schools will select the top 5% of students in each level to advance to the second stage, scheduled for the 7th of October. The competition covers participants from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd grade of high school.
