It is still possible to apply for the Astronomy Olympiad until May 10th!

A Brazilian Olympiad of Astronomy and Astronautics (OBA) is considered the biggest science competition in Brazil and reached another edition this year. The milestone reached has 26 editions and registration will remain open until May 10th. The event is held in partnership with the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and the Brazilian Astronomical Society (SAB).

João Batista Garcia Canalle, the astronomer and coordinator of the Astronomy in Brazil, from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), informed that the intention of the event is to make the most young people have access to science and are interested in astronomy, promoting access to different schools and different public.

How will the Astronomy Olympiad be?

The competition is aimed at elementary and high school students, whether Brazilian or foreign, the important thing is to be in a Portuguese language school.

Public or private schools can register for the competition that will take place on May 19, 9 days after the closing date for registration. The event will be face-to-face, with a single phase for participation.

In 2022, during the 25th edition, the event received almost 2 million registrations, a great milestone of a considerable growth for the organization, reaching 115% more participants compared to the year of 2021.

How to apply?

This year, the school's application must be made online through the olympics website until the 10th of May.

The student who wishes to participate and the school he is studying is not registered, may choose to participate in another institution registered in the competition to participate in the event.

The division of OBA is separated into four levels: the first three stages are aimed at elementary school students and the fourth and last stage is aimed at high school students.

The assessment has 10 questions, 3 of which are about astronautics and 7 about astronomy, with most of them being logical reasoning.

Students will have the opportunity to practice through the 'Mock OBA' to prepare, also available on the competition website or in videos on Official YouTube of the Olympics.
