The results of the study raise pertinent questions about the impact of ChatGPT and other similar tools in replacing human labor. However, the authors also point out that there are possible societal benefits associated with these findings.

According to one of the study's co-authors, Whitney Zhang, a doctoral student in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, there is the potential for reductions in inequality to occur over time as performance is leveled across different groups of people. skills.

The power of writing

Zhang noted that when ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, there was a lot of speculation about the impact that this tool, capable of generating fluent text upon request, would have on the work.

To investigate this effect, Zhang and his colleague Shakked Noy, also a doctoral student in economics at MIT, conducted an experiment with the aim of understanding how the chatbot would affect the productivity of workers. The results of that study were recently published in the journal Science.

They involved more than 400 university-educated professionals, including copywriters, marketers and publicists.

Participants were asked to perform various writing tasks such as writing press releases, short reports and analysis plans.

The results of the study revealed that the group that had access to the chatbot completed the second task significantly faster.

On average, it took them about 16 minutes to complete the task, compared to an average of 27 minutes for the group that didn't have access to the bot.

This difference in completion time suggests that using ChatGPT provided an advantage in terms of efficiency and speed in completing writing tasks.

The authors of the study sought to obtain an accurate assessment of the quality of the texts produced by the participants. For this, they relied on the expertise of experienced professionals, who evaluated the texts on a scale of 1 to 7.

When comparing the results of the first and second tasks, it was found that the group with access to the chatbot had an average score increase of 18% greater than the group without access.

This indicates that the use of the GPT had a significant impact on improving the quality of the texts produced, reflected in an increase in the evaluation score attributed by the experts.

According to economist Robert Seamans of the Stern School of Business at New York University, who was not involved in the research, chatbot use has a democratic effect. He notes that less experienced workers would benefit most from this technology.

This suggests that access to tools like ChatGPT can level the playing field, allowing individuals to with less experience have access to resources that were previously only available to more experienced professionals. skilled.
