Stunning: City of the Mittani Empire emerges from the waters 3,400 after000000

The past really intrigues many researchers and scholars, although it remains a mystery in many moments. After all, much of the ancient treasure has been lost over centuries and even millennia, but sometimes we manage to recover it. This is the case of this ancient city that emerged from the waters of the Tigris River, in the Kurdistan region, almost 3,500 years after its foundation and habitation.

Drought Allows Ancient City to Resurface

Between the years 1350 to 1550, the ancient Mittani Empire reigned in a region that stretched from the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. However, the city of Zakhiku ended up “disappearing” from the map after the construction of the Mosul dam in the 1980s.

However, an extreme drought was what was needed to revive the spirits of researchers, who began to notice that parts of the city were resurfacing. Thus, German archaeologists and Kurds decided to meet with the Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage of Duhok for this endeavor in search of the preservation of this historic cultural heritage.

The work even required excavations in temperatures below 0ºC, in snow, hail, rain and storms. However, as a reward, it was possible to document several structures of this empire with the new excavations.

Historical rescue

The lack of specific files on the Mittani people prevents it from being possible to state with certainty the customs and traditions of this people. On the other hand, the new discoveries seem to give clues to put together this puzzle. For example, it was possible to find at least 100 clay cuneiform tablets, which date back to at least 1000 years before Christ.

According to experts, it is practically a miracle that this raw clay material has been able to resist for all these centuries. In addition to the tablets, five ceramic vases were also found, in addition to other ancient constructions that served as dwellings in this ancient city.

For the time being, it is still not possible to say with clarity what information these new pieces bring, but there is already a real task force in the attempt to translate and interpret them.
