The exorbitant amount of pink paint used to bring the sets, especially the iconic Barbie House, to life was a driving factor in this global lack. The situation reached a point where even the brand faced difficulties in meeting the demand.

Greenwood shared this curious situation with an amused laugh: “The world has run out of pink,” she joked.

Barbie ended the color pink in the world?

With premiere scheduled for next July 20th, the long-awaited Barbie live-action movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by her and Noah Baumbach, promises to delight the public.

In an interview with the magazine, Gerwig revealed the importance of color in the film, highlighting his desire to maintain a playful atmosphere. According to her, the shades of pink play a key role, with a bright and almost exaggerated palette.

The director and screenwriter emphasized the importance of preserving the essence of children, seeking to create a visually striking experience.

The creation of the “alternate Barbie Land universe” was an essential part of the project, as mentioned by Gerwig. Interestingly, both she and set decorator Katie Spencer never owned an iconic Mattel Barbie doll growing up.

In addition to these curiosities, inspiration from Palm Springs modernism aesthetics played a significant role in the creative process.

Sarah Greenwood highlighted the perfection that existed in that era and stated that she strove to bring a sense of authenticity to the unreal world of Barbie.

The production designer sought to make Barbie more tangible through this context. However, the scarcity of pink paint was not exclusively caused by heavy use on movie sets.

Lauren Proud, vice president of marketing and digital experience at paint company Rosco, mentioned that the timing of development of the scenarios coincided with challenges faced by the global supply chain, affecting the supply of paints.

Despite the difficulties, the production team received the available supply and are now looking forward to seeing how the color pink plays out in the film.
