Professionals who have some type of disability earn less, have a higher unemployment rate and are increasingly face difficulties in getting into the job market here in our country, especially if it is in a way formal.
These claims came from a study that was released by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) last Wednesday, September 21, when the National Day of Combat of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated. The publication also addresses some points, such as inequalities in areas of work, income and education.

According to information from the IBGE, Brazil had a record of 4.2 million people aged 14 or over who had some kind of disability and who held some kind of job in 2019, before the arrival of the COVID-19. Of this total, only 34.3% – approximately 1.5 million people – worked formally. Among all workers without disabilities, the formalization rate was much higher, around 50.9% according to IBGE data.
In 2019, an average income from work of professionals who have some type of disability was also recorded, which was R$ 1,639.00 per month. This income was approximately 37.4% below what was estimated for workers without disabilities, who was at the monthly average of R$ 2,619.00, where the deflated values for July 2021.
Workers who had some type of disability received a lower income in all ten groups of economic activities that were analyzed. These professionals, according to information from the IBGE, were more concentrated in some sectors that traditionally have lower wages, such as, for example, domestic services, agriculture and housing, and also food.
“The lower pay of people with disabilities appears in all groups of activities, but there is also the effect of them being more concentrated in activities with lower income. This diversity of situations shows the need for adapted policies”, said Leonardo Athias, an IBGE analyst.
According to data from the study, the unemployment rate of people with some type of disability was 10.3% in 2019. Unemployment at the time was higher than that observed among people who do not have any disability, remaining at 9%.
Another indicator mentioned by the IBGE is the participation rate, which is calculated based on the strength of of work, people employed or unemployed, by the total population of working age, starting from 14 years. This indicator concerns the attractiveness of the labor market.
It is worth mentioning that in 2019 the participation rate of people with disabilities was 28.3%, equivalent to less than half of that verified among Brazilians who do not have a disability, with 66,3%.
