Located in the southeastern portion of the African continent, the territory of Zimbabwe has no outlet to the sea and is limited to Mozambique (to the northeast and east), South Africa (to the south), Botswana (to the southwest and the west) and Zambia (to the north and the northwest). The country's name means “stone house” in the Chona dialect.
With a predominance of tropical climate, Zimbabwe has beautiful natural landscapes, especially in the savannas that are home to many wild animals. The soil is fertile, a fact that makes the practice of agriculture possible. The main products cultivated are corn, tobacco, cotton, coffee, sugar cane, among others. Another important economic activity is mining, as the country has large reserves of gold, nickel, asbestos, etc.
Despite this economic potential, the nation suffers from several economic, social and political problems. Most of the population lives below the poverty line, that is, on less than $1.25 a day; more than 40% of Zimbabweans are malnourished; and many inhabitants are carriers of the HIV virus, a fact that directly reflects on the low life expectancy (47 years).
According to a report released in 2010 by the United Nations (UN), the Development Index Human Human Development (HDI) in Zimbabwe is only 0.140, the worst average among the 169 countries that make up the ranking. worldwide.
