The History of National Anthem of Brazil it is full of interesting facts, but unfortunately little publicized. Traditionally, what we know about the Anthem refers to the authors of the lyrics and music.

The lyrics were written by Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada and the music was written by Francisco Manuel da Silva. The Brazilian National Anthem was created in 1831 and had several names before the title, today, official. It was called the April 7 Hymn (because of the abdication of D. Pedro I), Marcha Triunfal and, finally, National Anthem.

National Anthem of Brazil
Lyrics by Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada
Music by Francisco Manuel da Silva

Part I

They heard the placid shores from Ipiranga
From a heroic people the resounding cry
And the sun of freedom, in blazing rays
It shone in the sky of the motherland at that moment

If the pledge of this equality
We managed to conquer with a strong arm
In your bosom, O freedom
Death itself defies our chest!

O beloved Fatherland
Worshiped
Save! Save!

Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray

From love and hope to the earth descends
If in your beautiful sky, smiling and clear
The image of the Cruise shines

Giant by nature
You are beautiful, you are strong, fearless colossus
And your future mirrors that greatness

adored land
Among other thousand
it's you, Brazil
O beloved Fatherland!
Of the children of this soil you are a gentle mother
Beloved homeland
Brazil!

Part II

Eternally lying in a splendid cradle
To the sound of the sea and the light of the deep sky
Fulguras, oh Brazil, flower of America
Illuminated in the sun of the New World!

Than the earth, brighter
Your smiling, beautiful fields have more flowers
Our woods have more life
Our life in your bosom more loves

O beloved Fatherland
Worshiped
Save! Save!

Brazil, of eternal love, be a symbol
The labar that bears stars
And say the blond green of that streamer
peace in the future and glory in the past

But if you raise the strong club from justice
You will see that a son of yours doesn't run away from the fight
Don't even fear, who loves you, death itself

adored land
Among other thousand
it's you, Brazil
O beloved Fatherland!
Of the children of this soil you are a gentle mother
Beloved homeland
Brazil!

With the advent of Proclamation of the Republic and by decision of Deodoro da Fonseca, which provisionally governed Brazil, a Grand Contest was held to compose another version of the Anthem. 36 candidates participated in the contest; among them Leopoldo Miguez, Alberto Nepomuceno and Francisco Braga.

The winner was Leopoldo Miguez, but the people did not accept the new anthem, as the one by Joaquim Osório and Francisco Manuel da Silva had become extremely popular since 1831. Through popular commotion, Deodoro da Fonseca said: “I prefer the existing anthem!”. Deodoro, very strategist and not to contradict the contest winner, Leopoldo Miguez, considered the new composition and named it the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic.

Decree 171, of 01/20/1890:

"Conserves the National Anthem and adopts the Proclamation of the Republic."

The Provisional Government of the Republic of the United States of Brazil constituted by the Army and Navy, on behalf of the Nation, decrees:

Art. 1º - The musical composition of conductor Francisco Manuel da Silva is preserved as a National Anthem.

Art. 2º - The composition of conductor Leopoldo Miguez, based on the poetry of citizen José Joaquim de Campos da Costa by Medeiros Albuquerque, is adopted under the title of Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic.

It is important to emphasize that the song that represents a nation, such as the National Anthem of Brazil, exalts facts that have happened, symbolizes all the past struggles, bears the identity of a people and the great responsibility of being the spokesperson of the Brazilian Nation for the rest of the world.
