According to the company's report, there was an increase of just over 0.5°C above the average recorded between 1991 and 2020, in terms of sea and air temperature. The previous record was in June 2019.
In addition, the company pointed out that Europe had records in several places during the last month. As it happened in North America, Asia and eastern Australia.
According to the report, temperatures are significantly warmer than normal for the season. – that it is already the hot season in these places, as they end spring and enter summer in June.
High temperatures at sea in June
Also according to the Copernicus Climate Service report, the sea temperature reached a new record in June.
This is mainly due to long-term changes – which started way back and are now showing results – and also due to El Niño.
Namely, the El Niño is a natural weather phenomenon that powers tropical cyclones in the Pacific Ocean. This causes an increase in the number and volume of rainfall.
The weather company's text also says that temperature changes - which they called “exceptionally warm anomalies” – on the surface of the sea, mainly in the Atlantic Ocean North. In addition, “extreme maritime heatwaves have been observed in Ireland, the UK and the Baltic Sea”, it reads.
The danger of high seawater temperatures lies in the melting of glaciers of the poles. In June, Antarctic sea ice had its lowest extent since satellite observations began. It is estimated that, today, the territory is 17% below the average.
