What is “Freezer Burn”?

The call "freezer burn” (in English) is precisely the name given when food is burned by the cold from the freezer or freezer. Thus, this phenomenon occurs when the food comes out of the freezer with discolored spots, dry areas and formation of layers of ice on top, called "frostbite“.

Thus, many people wonder whether this phenomenon has an impact on food safety and whether they can be consumed or not. However, beyond that doubt, one certainty is that a change in quality occurs and seriously affected foods may become tasteless or have a distinctly metallic taste.

Is it bad to eat these foods?

According to experts, it is super safe to eat these foods that have been in direct contact with the ice, as long as the affected part is preferably small. Because, when this is the case, just remove the part that was burned or that has a lot of ice accumulated, to take advantage of the rest of the food, as explained by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

When it comes to general burns, which affect most foods, it is best not to cook because of the relatively high chance of loss of quality. In this case, it will depend on your willingness to do it or not! However, that does not directly affect your health.

According to the USDA FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service), eating meat or chicken that has been freezer burn will not harm you as long as you cook it to a temperature of 50°C for inside. However, as already mentioned, for meats, freezer burn can also affect their quality, making them dry and tasteless.
