TikTok teaches you how to identify 'zillennials' in real life

The most frequent discussions about the differences between millennials and generation Z have become very popular on TikTok. What happens when someone doesn't fully identify with any of these generations?

Or even worse, when you feel connected to both? That's where the term "zillennials“. This microgeneration, composed of individuals born approximately between 1990 and 2000, finds itself in a unique position in the timeline, on the fringes of millennial groups and Generation Z.

TikTok users who call themselves zillennials claim that they don't fit the stereotypes associated with any of the traditional generations.

They feel a connection to both generational groups, but also experience a sense of not belonging to either. This hybrid identity leads them to question where exactly they fit in the timeline and how their experiences compare to those of millennials and Gen Z.

Who are the Zillennials?

Within TikTok, users have been trying to unravel the identity of zillennials, offering suggestions about behaviors and characteristics they consider unique to this microgeneration.

Many of these suggestions point to the idea that zillennials operate in an in-between space, sharing some traits of Generation Z, while also identifying with the lifestyle of millennials.

This generational ambiguity leads to a lively discussion about the unique experiences and perspectives of Zillennials and how they differ from adjacent generations.

One TikToker shared a quirky take on how to spot a zillennial in public: They usually opt for straight leg jeans, which are neither overly baggy nor tight.

This style choice is seen as a neutral option compared to the signature millennial skinny jeans or baggy pants often associated with Gen Z.

User @zozoakz noted a possible difference in posts by zillennials compared to millennials and Gen Zers.

From their perception, zillennials seem to prefer sharing pictures of themselves hanging out with friends on their social media. This is in contrast to millennials, who are known for posting selfies, and Gen Z, who often choose to take blurry photos to create a carefree aesthetic.

According to her, there are zillennials who try to deny their age group and become part of Generation Z by dedicating themselves excessively to TikTok. On the other hand, some choose to distinguish themselves from the younger members of Generation Z, who still go to school, using statements such as: “At your age, I used a flip phone”

Due to their position at the boundary between Millennials and Gen Z, Zillennials often find themselves facing disagreements over which of the two generations they most identify with. You could be a member of this generation and not even know it!
