The Brazilian Public Security Forum, which produced the Yearbook, ranked Pernambuco in 5th place with the highest murder rate – totaling 37.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The cities in the top 50 most dangerous ranking are:

  1. Cabo de Santo Agostinho, with 81.2 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants;
  2. Vitória de Santo Antão, with 51.5 per 100,000 inhabitants;
  3. São Lourenço da Mata, with 50.2 per 100,000 inhabitants;
  4. Garanhuns, in the Agreste: with 44.9 per 100 thousand inhabitants;
  5. Jaboatão dos Guararapes, with 44.6 with 100 thousand inhabitants.

As we reported above, Pernambuco has recorded a drop in violent deaths since 2017, when it reached a peak of 5,427 victims.

Its 1.3% increase compared to the previous year is inconsistent with the rest of Brazil, which had a 2.4% reduction in the number of violent deaths in the last year.

State has low investment in security

Also according to the Yearbook, the state of Pernambuco has one of the lowest expenses with public security. On average, the expense was R$ 334.09 for each resident, ranking with the 4th worst investment. Thus, the state is behind only São Paulo, Piauí and Maranhão.

Amapá, for example, registers an expense four times greater than Pernambuco, spending R$ 1,236.64 on public security per resident.
