Sunset", "sunset", "sunset" or "sunset"? These are the forms that users of the Portuguese language use when writing the compound word that refers to the act of the sun setting over the horizon. However, only one of them is correct: the expression “por do sol” (with an accent and without a hyphen). Therefore, “put” is a noun verb and not a preposition (“by”), since it indicates the action of the sun setting.

Sunset", "sunset", "sunset" or "sunset": which one is correct?

The correct answer is “sunset” (with an accent and without a hyphen). This is because “por” (without an accent) is a preposition, while “put” (with an accent) is a verb noun. After all, the expression refers to the act of the sun setting over the horizon. As for the hyphen, the grammatical rule says that, in a compound word, we do not use a hyphen if it has a linking element, in this case, the term “do”.

A compound word in which the presence of a linking element is verified had a hyphen before the new spelling agreement.
