Camilo Santana will be Minister of Education in the Lula government

Camilo Santana should be the new Minister of Education in Lula's government from January 2023.

Santana is a former governor of Ceará and was elected senator in this year's election for the Workers' Party (PT). He must step down to take over the portfolio.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on Monday night (19) in Brasília. Present at the occasion were Lula, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, Fernando Haddad, who is expected to take over the Ministry da Fazenda, Elmano de Freitas who was elected governor of Ceará and the current governor of the state of Ceará, Izolda Cell. The official announcement has not yet been made.

Cela was also being considered to take over Education. She should hold the position of Secretary of Basic Education.

Who is Camilo Santana?

  • He graduated in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). Completed a master's degree in Development and Environment from the same institution;

  • He served as a professor and coordinator at the Faculty of Technology (Fatec) in Cariri;

  • He was deputy superintendent of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) in Ceará;

  • He was Secretary of Agrarian Development of Ceará between 2007 and 2010 during the government of Cid Gomes;

  • He was the most voted candidate for federal deputy for Ceará in 2010 with 131 thousand votes;

  • He was elected governor of Ceará in 2014 in the first round with 53.35% of the votes. Izolda Cela was part of his government as deputy.

  • In 2018, Santana won 79.96% of the votes in the re-election dispute for the government of Ceará. In April of this year, he asked to resign from the post that was held by Izolda.
