The matter of the return of DST took the internet by storm this Monday, November 7th. This is due to the fact that the president-elect, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, having raised a poll on a social network about his return.

As usual, the theme divided opinions, with those who love the schedule and others who reject it.

Regarding the poll until 9 am today (8), 68% of users asked for the return of daylight saving time, and 32% had voted against it.

the summer time

The summer schedule consists of the maximum use of sunlight in order to save energy consumption. electricity.

This measure is adopted in several countries and was instituted in Brazil during the administration of Getulio Vargas, in 1931 and 1932, but it only started to be adopted without interruption from 1985, with the aim of taking advantage of natural lighting on longer days and, with that, saving energy and reduce the risk of blackouts.

The suspension of summer time was already studied by the government of Michel Temer, but fell in 2019, in the first year of the government of Jair Bolsonaro.

At the time, the government stated that the annual advancement of clocks by one hour "had lost its raison d'être". applied from the point of view of the electricity sector", given the changes in the pattern of energy consumption and the advance technological.

Energy consumption reduces with summer time?

According to new studies by the National Electrical System Operator (ONS), the application of summer time this year does not bring benefits to the operation of the national electrical system.

Do not stop now... There's more after the publicity ;)

However, the figures already released by the ONS itself, between 2010 and 2014, the use of sunlight resulted in savings of R$ 835 million for consumers, mainly due to the reduction in the need for use of thermoelectric (of more expensive operation).

Data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy in recent years also show that Brazil has saved at least R$ 1.4 billion since 2010 for adopting summer time, due to an average reduction of 0.5% in energy consumption, reaching 4.5% in peak.

But the economy in energy consumption has fallen in recent years, causing the measure to have little relevance, both for the security of the energy sector and in the composition of the price of the light. The savings generated fell from BRL 405 million in 2013 to BRL 147.5 million in 2016.

An analysis on the possibility of resuming the extinct mechanism was carried out, at the request of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, in August of that year. In the midst of the water crisis and growing pressure from some sectors of the economy, the agency also requested an assessment on the return of the mechanism.

The new study was requested precisely to understand if there was any change in this scenario, with the growth in solar energy generation, mainly due to the expansion of generation systems distributed. Despite the opinion, the decision on the measure will be up to the federal government.
