Good Foods for the Brain

Contrary to what many people thought, scientists discovered in the 1990s, that neurons reproduce in the course of life. The birth process of new nerve cells, which is called neurogenesis, can be stimulated through food, ensuring noble functions, such as the ability to memorize and reason.

The novelty is that a diet enriched with choline, a nutrient present in egg yolks, contributes to neurogenesis; on the other hand, the white contains glutamine, which is essential for constituting the DNA, that is, the genetic material of new cells in the gray matter. Another substance that is good for brain activity is omega 3, a fatty acid that promotes neurogenesis and protects existing ones. The nutrient can be found in fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna.

It is also important to balance the diet with protein, fat and carbohydrates, since the brain uses a large amount of glucose, which can be found in bread, pasta and rice. Yellow fruits and vegetables are also indicated, as they are sources of beta-carotene, an effective antioxidant against cell aging. Other sources of antioxidants are: berries and nuts such as walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts.

Meat, whole grains, milk and its derivatives are sources of vitamin B complex, which helps regulate transmission between neurons.
