Risks of excessive consumption of soda

Soda is a very popular drink among people, especially among young people. Although it looks harmless, the soda, when consumed in excess, can harm health. Therefore, it is essential not to overuse this product.


What is soda?

According to the Brazilian Association of Soft Drinks and Non-Alcoholic Beverage Industries (ABIR), soft drinks can be defined as acarbonated drink, obtained by dissolving, in water, juice or natural extract, added with sugar or sweeteners (sweeteners). Also according to ABIR, the soda must have, obligatorily, water, juice or vegetable extract, sugar or sweeteners and carbon dioxide.

What are the damages that soft drinks cause to health?

How we know, the soda is rich in sugars, therefore it presents a high caloric value. Also, it features acidulants, preservatives and artificial colors. Due to these characteristics, soft drinks are associated with a number of health problems.

Due to the large amount of sugars, soft drinks are related to weight gain and with obesity.

Obesity, in turn, is related to serious health problems, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. In addition, studies demonstrate the relationship between excessive consumption of soda and high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and for Brain stroke, also called a stroke.

Research also suggests a relationship between cola soft drink consumption and bone changes that lead to reduced bone mass and increased risk of fractures. In addition, the presence of other substances in soft drinks, such as some dyes, can trigger allergic processes.


Importance of healthy eating

We saw that the soft drinks, mainly because of your high caloric value, can influence negatively to people's health. However, having a healthy diet does not only mean removing the soda from the diet, it is necessary to include it in the meals nutrient rich foods and dose those that can cause harm. Adding vegetables to the menu and reducing your consumption of salt and sweets are simple actions that can improve your diet.
