Aeronaut and eclectic American inventor born in Jefferson Mills, now Riverton, New Hampshire, who during the Civil War (1861-1865) invented the telegraphic message through hot air balloons (1861). An aviation pioneer and hot air balloonist during the civil war, he was the primary aeronaut of the Army of the Potomac during the war. He initially took a self-built balloon trip from Ohio to demonstrate the usefulness of balloons in military observation. Unfortunately, after flying 1,448 km, he was forced to land in South Carolina where he was briefly imprisoned as a union spy.
President and Commander-in-Chief Abraham Lincoln named him head of the U Corps of Aeronautics. S. Army He made more than 3,000 ascents, some from Navy ships. His corps reached seven balloons where he observed battles like the one at Fair Oaks, Virginia (1862), in the Intrepid military balloon, providing information that provided surprise maneuvers to the Army of the Unity.
Developed inventions and improvements for latitude and longitude determination (1860), ice making and refrigeration systems (1865-1868) and processing of gas and coal, in addition to having produced photographs historical events. Directed the construction of the railroad across Echo Mountain, today Mount Lowe, California (1891-1894), operated by the Pacific Electric Railway for over four decades (1937).
