Some Romanticism writers took a stand against the rationalist and materialist values of bourgeois society, they identified with a satanic, mysterious, death, dream and madness environment, then created a literature fanciful. it is about the Gothic tradition literature.
Álvares de Azevedo introduced elements of the Gothic tradition into Brazilian literature, such as death, the nocturnal environment, love, and vampirism. This production breaks with society's values, as it has a marginal character.
There are other writers who had links with this trend in Europe, Charles Baudelaire and Mallarmé, in the United States, Edgar Allan Poe and in Brazil, Cruz e Sousa, Alphonsus de Guimaraens and Augusto dos Angels.
The works Noite na taverna (tales) and Macário (theatrical play) represent the Gothic-Romantic production in prose; both by Álvares de Azevedo.
The Gothic tradition finds followers not only in literature, but in music and cinema. Former member of the group Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, is one of the representatives of satanic rock. In cinema, we can highlight: Dance of the Vampires (R. Polanky), Nosferatu (F.W. Murnau) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (F. Coppola).
In addition to Gothic, the youth of the 50s, 60s and 70s sought other forms of expression: the marginal, and the cinema also documented this movement with the films Mechanical Orange (70s) and Misguided Youth (years 50).
Singer Raul Seixas and writer Paulo Coelho wrote some songs together, such as Rock of the Devil.
devil's rock
the devil wears a cloak
It's rock, it's touch, it's folk
Devil!
He was the one who gave me the touch
While Freud explains things
the devil keeps ringing
there are two devils
Only one stopped on the track
One of them is the touch
The other is that of the Exorcist
The devil is the father of rock!
