O Portuguese is a language originated in Galician-Portuguese, a language spoken in the Kingdom of Galicia and in the north of Portugal. In the period of Great Navigations, the language was widespread in conquered lands, such as Brazil, Africa and other parts of the world.
Portuguese, or Portuguese Language, is today one of the most spoken languages in the world! With approximately 280 million speakers, it is present in nine different countries on four continents.
They are: Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Cape Verde, Brazil, Mozambique, East Timor, São Tomé and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea.
Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country (speaking of the Portuguese language), as it has the largest number of speakers, around 185 million inhabitants. After him, we can mention:
Mozambique: 18.8 million inhabitants
Angola: 10.9 million inhabitants
Portugal: 10.5 million inhabitants
Guinea-Bissau: 1.4 million inhabitants
East Timor: 800 thousand inhabitants
Cape Verde: 415,000 inhabitants
São Tomé and Príncipe: 182,000 inhabitants
Equatorial Guinea: 100,000 inhabitants
In order to preserve the unity of the language in Portuguese-speaking countries and promote the union and proximity of countries that have it as their official language, the New Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese Language, which unified the spelling of words in the Portuguese language.
