American film actor born in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, one of the most characteristic of American musical cinema and known as a tap dancer. He began studying dance at age four and began his professional career at age seven (1907) alongside his sister, Adele, one eldest, in a New Jersey concert hall. Soon they would be considered the best children's duo on the show bussines, and in 10 years they had already conquered Broadway, working on three numbers at the same time.
He gained international fame on Broadway in the third decade of the twentieth century. He went to Hollywood (1933) where he made his film debut with A Alegre Divorciada (1933) and over the next six years made famous duo with Ginger Rogers (1911-1995), born Virginia Katherine McMath, and starring together in ten films, including Top Hat (1935) and Swing Time (1936), has also danced with Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Cyd Charisse and Audrey Hepburn.
After his last great musical, Silk Stockings (1957), he participated in films of other genres and works for TV, where shined in four specials: An Evening with Fred Astaire (1958), Astaire Time (1960), Hollywood Palace (1966) and The Fred Astaire Show (1968). The first alone won nine Emmy Awards, including one for best actor. He won a special Oscar (1949) for his unrivaled art. He published his autobiography, titled Steps in Time (1959) and died of pneumonia in Los Angeles. He left an unmistakable mark in the history of Cinema and was a renowned artist of musicals, shows and TV, whose success, unmatched, became legend in the artistic scene.
He introduced choreographic innovations for the camera that created a revolutionary new concept for dance in films, as well as his personal style, a model of class and masculine elegance. He acted in 40 films and premiered in 15 musicals in theaters in New York and London. He has choreographed Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Marilyn Miller, Ginger Rogers and Allen Kearns in theatrical performances. He has recorded more than 18 albums between Lps, collections and film and television soundtracks, as well as composing 20 popular songs.
