The Federal Government announced the implementation of the New High School (NEM) last Wednesday (14). According to the schedule, the news should be implemented as early as 2022. With this, changes in the National Secondary Education Examination (Enem) will be inevitable.
The schedule published by the Government guarantees an increase from 800 to 1,000 hours of stay at school. Thus, students will spend more time dedicated to education.
The implementation of the new guidelines will take place gradually. In 2022, 1st year students will already have classes according to the NEM. In 2023, the changes will reach the 1st and 2nd year.
Only in 2024 is the process completed in three years of high school. NEM focuses on the choice of subjects by young students.
President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) was not present at the event that would be held at Palácio do Planalto. Bolsonaro had to go to the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasília. The Brazilian president suffers from abdominal pain. For this reason, the ceremony was transferred to the headquarters of the National Institute of Education and Educational Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep).
The NEM was established based on five training itineraries:
- Languages and Technologies;
- Mathematics and its technologies;
- Natural Sciences;
- Human Sciences; and
- Technical and professional training.
Each student will have the right to choose the subjects he intends to take.
The Ministry of Education (MEC) also announced the installation of media centers in each state of the Federation. The objective is to offer hybrid education (digital and on-site) to the population.
Changes in ENEM from 2024
With the changes, the National Secondary Education Examination (Enem) will also undergo changes. However, the new format can only be applied when the three high school grades are affected by the new guidelines.
Despite the changes, Enem will continue to be carried out in two stages. On the first day, the test will have a general character, according to the Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC).

On the second day, candidates will take specific tests, linked to the chosen undergraduate course.
New Enem test division for 2024:
– 1st day: the tests of Enem on the first day, according to BNCC, would be:
– Languages;
- Math;
– Natural Sciences;
– Human Sciences.
– 2nd day: the assessments on the second day will address specific disciplines focused on the areas of:
- Biological Sciences;
- Exact Sciences;
– Human Sciences.
The NEM presentation ceremony brought together State and District Education Secretaries. Representatives of the National Education Council (CNE) and governors were present.
In addition to representatives of the Education Committees of the Chamber and Senate and representatives of the National Council of Secretaries of Education (Consed).
