10 Questions and Answers: Global Warming (Questions and Activities)

1. WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

Global warming is a long-term phenomenon caused by gas emissions that intensify the greenhouse effect, arising from a series of human actions, and which has led to an increase in the average temperature of the oceans and atmosphere of the Earth.

2. AND THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT? EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS, HOW IT OCCURS AND IF IT IS A NATURAL CAUSE.

The greenhouse effect is an important process for the existence of life on Earth as we know it. It is a natural process where the solar radiation that reaches the atmosphere interacts with the gases present there. In this interaction, the so-called greenhouse gases absorb solar radiation and start to emit infrared radiation, or better said, heat, back to the Earth's surface. Only part of this heat (infrared radiation) is able to leave the atmosphere and return to space – and that is how the Earth manages to maintain its temperature.

3. WHY HAS MAN AGGRAVATED THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

With the Industrial Revolution, oil and coal became a source of energy generation for the expansion of economic activities, which led to greater emission of greenhouse gases. Thanks to the greenhouse effect, the average temperature of the Earth's surface remains around 15°C. However, when greenhouse gases are found in excess in the atmosphere, more heat is trapped.

4. WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE GASES?

The main ones are: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O)

5. WHAT IS THE HEATING REDUCTION GOAL FOR THE NEXT YEARS?

After the signing of the Paris Agreement, in 2015, an international treaty to combat global warming with the accession of 195 nations, the The objective is to limit the increase in the average temperature to 1.5°C by 2100, compared to the pre-industrial period, and to avoid at all costs exceeding 2°C

6. MENTION SOME CONSEQUENCES OF GLOBAL WARMING

Increase in temperature on the planet, increase in ocean temperature, extinction of species, rise in sea levels, heat waves, etc.

7. WHAT IS THE IPCC AND WHAT IS ITS IMPORTANCE FOR WARMING THE PLANET?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is a scientific organization founded by the United Nations (UN). Its main function is to issue reports on carbon fluxes related to terrestrial ecosystems and with this it is possible to get an idea of how these emissions are progressing.

8. HOW CAN EACH PERSON FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING?

Individually speaking, each person can practice attitudes that can contribute to change. Attitudes related to the reduction and reuse of all material can influence the reduction of global warming.

9. WHAT IS THE DIRECT RELATIONSHIP OF GLOBAL WARMING TO CARBON?

Carbon dioxide – CO2 – is the main among all types of greenhouse gas compared to other gases such as methane or nitrous oxide,
CO2 absorbs less heat per molecule. However, in addition to being much more abundant, CO2 remains for much longer periods of time in the atmosphere. It also absorbs wavelengths of thermal energy that are not absorbed by water vapor, intensifying the greenhouse effect in a unique way. Thus, of the total energy imbalance caused by all the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities, it is estimated that CO2 accounts for almost two thirds.

10. HOW CAN DEFORESTATION INFLUENCE GLOBAL WARMING?

The reason is that forests store carbon in plants and soils. This deforestation is usually accompanied by burning, which releases a very large amount of carbon dioxide. Estimates are that forests are responsible for 11% of total annual gas emissions, this number is an extremely high value for just one cause. There is also a reduction in carbon sequestration.
