October 13 — National Day of the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist

On October 13th, the National Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist Day. This date was chosen because it represents the day of creation of these professions and was celebrated annually by the category, despite not being recognized by law. In January 2015, however, President Dilma Rousseff sanctioned the Law No. 13,084, which officially established the celebration of the date throughout the national territory.

THE physiotherapy is an area of ​​health involved in the study, prevention and treatment of injuries to the human body resulting from trauma and acquired or genetic diseases. Professionals in this area are called physiotherapists and must have higher academic training in this area.

According to the Federal Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (COFFITO), the different areas of this field of activity are clinical physiotherapy, collective health, education and others. At clinical physiotherapy, the professional is qualified to work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, among other health units. At

collective health, the physiotherapist is responsible for promoting actions that guarantee the health of groups of people, being able to participate, for example, in occupational physiotherapy programs and basic health actions. In the area of education, the professional can work in undergraduate and graduate courses, in addition to conducting research in the field. Finally, the area classified as "others” encompasses the development of equipment and products for physiotherapy and activities in the sports area.

The physiotherapist, therefore, has a role that goes beyond rehabilitation after accidents and traumas, being essential in the prevention of serious injuries and in health promotion. Among the important roles played by this professional, we can mention the therapy performed with patients with respiratory problems and people who spend long periods in hospitals, such as ICUs, as well as the improvement gives quality of life of the elderly, with actions that improve muscle and spine problems.

THE occupational therapy, in turn, is an area related to the study, prevention and treatment of physical, mental, emotional and social problems that make it difficult for a patient to carry out daily activities. During treatment, the professional must seek ways so that the person, little by little, can perform these tasks, thus ensuring their well-being and independence.

To practice the profession, it is necessary to take a higher course in occupational therapy. After acquiring the appropriate training, these professionals can work in companies, clinics, clinics, day care centers, schools and prison systems, in addition to being able to carry out social projects. It is noteworthy that the occupational therapist has to deal with people with difficulties in performing simple tasks, being fundamental patience and love for the chosen area.

Both Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are essential for promoting the health and well-being of the population in general. Therefore, it is only fair to honor these important professionals every year.
