THE marginalization it is a concept from sociology that is related to exclusion whether social, cultural, political, economic.

Thus, marginalized individuals, that is, those who suffer the process of marginalization, are popularly called “marginal”, “stray” or “poor”. They are on the margins of society and do not have the same rights and access to health, food, housing and education as others.

The marginalization process occurs due to several factors and intensify the social differences, however, it is worth noting that the individuals who make up the group of marginalized people do not choose such a position and, in most of the time, they suffer hostilities, discrimination, prejudice and violence that cause several problems to their life.

Note that marginalization occurs in different areas: social, cultural, political and economic. In this way, marginalized people are removed from society and are outside different social, cultural, political or economic contexts.

It is worth mentioning some examples of marginalized people: poor, unemployed, homosexuals, transvestites, immigrants, blacks, disabled, elderly, among others. Large cities are the places where the processes of marginalization and, consequently, of inequalities are most notorious.

Types of Marginalization

There are several types of marginalization, namely:

  • Social Marginalization: concept associated with social exclusion and the social conditions of individuals, therefore, those who suffer social marginalization are excluded from society and considered inferior.
  • Cultural marginalization: concept associated with cultural exclusion and distance from the culture in which it is inserted. Therefore, those who suffer from cultural marginalization are oblivious to beliefs, customs, traditions and cultural heritages. Ethnic and cultural minorities are excluded from society and, therefore, are unable to fully exercise citizenship.
  • Political marginalization: concept associated with political exclusion, formed by individuals who cannot exercise the same rights and duties as other political groups.
  • Economic marginalization: concept associated with economic exclusion. An example of problems related to economic marginalization is poverty. Thus, those with low economic conditions are excluded and therefore do not have the same rights as others.

Child Marginalization

Child Marginalization is one of the social problems that has been faced by several societies, especially the less favored ones.

Thus, most of these marginalized children are abandoned at an early stage, usually because they have drug-addict parents, or are involved in alcoholism and prostitution.

It seems nonsense, however, it is very common to see children living on the streets of Brazil begging, prostituting themselves or using drugs. They suffer from different prejudices and grow up without access to studies, food and health.

In this regard, it is worth remembering that if they do not receive support from society with the development of public policies addressed to this social problem, these marginalized children will be transformed into young people and adults marginalized. This generates several problems for society, especially due to the increase in violence and social inequality.
