It is an aggressive spider. The name "armadeira" is due to its form of attack. When threatened, it raises its front legs, opens its stingers and bristles the thorns implanted in its body. Furthermore, they are very agile and tend to follow their prey.

The food of the armadeiras is composed of small insects and arthropods.

In the wild, armored spiders are found in dark places, such as holes or among foliage. It is common to see them in the dark interior of the leaf sheaths of coconut trees, palm trees and in bunches of banana trees.

How do accidents with the armadeira spider occur?

Accidents with humans occur in the domestic environment. The gunsmiths usually hide in shoes, behind curtains and in the middle of clothes. In these places, they end up attacking the man, who is surprised by the spider's presence.

Farm workers are also subject to attack by the armadeira spider, especially when collecting bunches of bananas. When collecting bunches of bananas and carrying them on their backs, they can suffer the bite of the armadeira spider.

In Brazil, there are several cases of accidents with the armadeira spider. Most are concentrated in the South and Southeast regions.

THE Brown spider and the tarantula are also responsible for causing accidents in Brazil.

Armor spider venom and its symptoms

The venom is very active in humans. In children and elderly people it can lead to death.

Among the symptoms of the venom are: pain at the site of the sting, rapid pulse, fever, sweating, respiratory problems, dizziness and vomiting.

It is important to urgently refer the bitten person to the medical service. Treatment involves the use of anti-arachnid serum. To combat the intense pain, analgesics and sedatives can also be used.

Curiosities

  • Studies have shown that venom toxins act directly on nervous system mechanisms responsible for pain. Thus, they can be used as a more potent analgesic than morphine and other medications;
  • The armadeira spider occurs throughout South America, but can be taken to other locations through accidental transport in bunches of bananas.
