What is Landscape?

landscape is what our senses infer from part of a space, that is, the sensations that a given place transmits to us. This happens when we see a place and consider it beautiful, when we smell it, hear or touch something in that place.

The landscape is responsible for recording several representative aspects of society. In this sense, the concept of landscape expands, as it is not limited to a geographical division.

It reveals aspects related to history, culture and, among many other aspects, to the economy of a society.

This is because the landscape has important values and several functions. The landscape we see today may have already gone through a process of modification, possibly as a result of the use given to it.

What is Landscape?Beach landscape: beauty, sea air, silence, peace

A place with potential for tourist exploitation has its infrastructure modified to receive tourists.

On the other hand, the increase in population in a given territorial extension results in an imminent change to accommodate population demands. Examples are: building houses, and other works, and paving streets.

A landscape rich in historic buildings reveals its antiquity. Its conservation can safeguard historical aspects and speak a lot about the culture of its people.

Types of Landscapes

There are several types of landscape. They are the ones who understand what is defined as geographic space.

Natural landscape

What is Landscape?Natural landscape: green scenery with clean, fresh water

THE natural landscape refers to nature. Mountains, sea, waterfalls are natural spaces that can usually be modified as a result of climatic aspects and other natural events, not by human intervention.

Humanized Landscape

What is Landscape?Modified landscape: city with several buildings

THE humanized landscape, modified or artificial is one in which the intervention of men is clearly perceptible.

In these cases, the landscape is modified to create infrastructure. Just think of a portion of uninhabited land and plan the construction of everything that makes it capable of being populated: buildings, schools, hospitals, shops, roads.

cultural landscape

What is Landscape?Indigenous tribe: village surrounded by green landscape

THE cultural landscape reveals cultural aspects of a territorial extension. The way it presents itself indicates the customs and values of its inhabitants.

As an example, we can mention the indigenous tribes. The occupation of these sites is very different from the structures created for a non-indigenous population.

It is important to emphasize that different landscapes are important, so there must be a balance between them.

The natural landscape is essential for protecting the environment. But the humanization of some spaces cannot be easily dispensed with, since many buildings aim at the well-being and provide better conditions for its inhabitants.

Conserving certain landscapes, in turn, contributes to the enhancement of a society's identity.
